Although the essay was probably written as a rhetorical exercise, it provides a vivid picture the utter desolation of the Sahara Desert and the tribulations of the Garamantians. It is clear that Lucian does not romanticize the lifestyle of the Garamantes. I advise you to read the entire essay for its wonderful use of imagery and juxtaposition, but here is an excerpt from Lucian's text:
