The historian, we may say, should be like Phidias, Praxiteles, Alcamenes, or any great sculptor. They similarly did not create the gold, silver, ivory, or other material they used; it was ready to their hands, provided by Athens, Elis, or Argos; they only made the model, sawed, polished, cemented, proportioned the ivory, and plated it with gold; that was what their art consisted in-the right arrangement of their material.
Historians are creators, but their creations are made of the deeds and accomplishments of others. Some historians are part of the events they are recording; however, the events are always larger than the individual experience. Artists likewise sublimate the mundane resources and create something from something, but a bland something. http://lucianofsamosata.info/TheWayToWriteHistory.html
