I believe that Herodotus had a concrete idea on what the ultimate purpose of history is. To him, history is to be investigated not only so things might not be forgotten, but also so we can have concrete ethical examples. With history, we can see with a degree of objectivity what valor is, what happiness is, what success is, what evil is, what good is, what hubris is.
